iWeiss Lifts John Jay College

The Gerald Lynch Theatre at John Jay College in New York City has a new stage lift thanks to the iWeiss installation team. Recommended by Serapid USA and selected by ThyssenKrupp Elevator Company, iWeiss provided a complete service package for the project - from demolition of the existing hydraulic lift, installation of an electrical control system, to installation of the special finish floor.

As Serapid's authorized U.S. distributor, the iWeiss team completed the complex installation of the custom-built stage lift in February within the targeted project timeframe. As a result, John Jay College is now enjoying their new lift that includes a total of four play positions - a storage level, an orchestra level, an auditorium level for seat extension, and a stage level for stage extension. Following a lift installation in the David H. Koch Theatre at The Lincoln Center, the John Jay project marks the second Serapid lift successfully installed by iWeiss in New York City.

Belton Joins iWeiss as Project Manager

Nicholas Belton recently joined iWeiss as Project Manager. Mr. Belton comes to iWeiss from Royal Caribbean International, where as Stage & Production Manager, he led the day-to-day operations of the cruise ships’ state-of-the-art performance venues. His involvement in launching new theatre venues and working with contactors and vendors will prove especially valuable in his new position.

“The diversity of iWeiss’ design and installation projects is impressive,” states Mr. Belton. “I look forward to bringing my technical production experiences from working in small, specialty, and Broadway-style venues, as well as my passion for the performing arts, to each of them.”

Mr. Belton earned a bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts with an emphasis in Design & Stage Management from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA. He can be reached at nicholasb@iweiss.com.

He is replacing Uli Dermody, who has been with iWeiss for nineteen years and leaving the company to pursue other interests.

Kupferberg Center for the Arts Renovation Completed

iWeiss just completed the replacement of (26) double purchase counterweight sets with (46) motorized line sets using Stage Technologies’ BT-Lite Variable Speed Winches as part of an extensive renovation at the Kupferberg Center for the Performing Arts at Queens College of the City University of New York. This system was supplied with a dual speed sensing control station giving the Goldstein Theatre the ability to move its line sets at two different speeds pending the load on the batten, or more specifically loads up to 900lbs at 4ft/sec and greater loads up to 1800lbs at 2ft/sec. This new installation of Stage Technologies’ winches and Illusionist console gives the staff at the Goldstein Theatre the opportunity to create various scenery changes at the push of a button with technology currently in use on many Cirque De Soleil productions and at professional opera houses around the globe. The project was managed by iWeiss senior project manager Richard Parks in cooperation with ARUP Consultants. iWeiss is proud to be an authorized dealer and installer of all Stage Technologies products.

We recently had the pleasure of working with The Shubert Organization and Francesca Russo Architect on two theatre renovations, the Ambassador Theatre and the Booth Theatre. Both projects involved box draperies, rail caps and skirts, as well as various lobby drapes. These architectural draperies play an important part in providing an elegant and comfortable setting for your patrons and often involve painted or embroidered details and custom trim.

iWeiss Welcomes Sera Daemi

iWeiss is pleased to announce that Sera Daemi has joined the company as Director of Operations. Most recently Sera was General Manager at RTR Technologies, a leading manufacturer of heating products and control systems for the rail industry. Sera brings a wealth of experience to this position, having lead efforts in production, finance, human resources, marketing, and operations. iWeiss president, David Rosenberg states "Sera was previously part of the iWeiss team as the drapery production manager in the late 1980s; it is fantastic to welcome her back to the company as we look to expand and better serve our clients." Sera will be working closely with Senior Vice President Jennifer Tankleff in day to day operations.

Printed Art Curtain for Cary Arts Center

We congratulate the Town of Cary, NC on the opening of its newly renovated Cary Arts Center. During the building’s 143 year history it served as home to a number of Cary elementary and secondary schools, including North Carolina’s first public high school. Now renovated, the Cary Arts Center is a three-story building with 16 classrooms, art gallery, library, and a fully functioning theater with fly loft. The stage features a beautiful printed main curtain provided by iWeiss. The 50’ x 20’ curtain was printed on velour with a design and art provided by Cary artist Jim Hirschfield and Norie Sato of Seattle, WA.

Motorized Lighting Grid for Irondale Ensemble

iWeiss recently designed, engineered and installed a motorized truss lighting grid for the Irondale Center for Theater, Education and Outreach located in the large former Sunday school space of the historic Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn.

The 53’ x 38’ grid consists of 280' of 20.5” heavy duty aluminum box truss that is raised by ten one ton chain motors. The grid is rated for an evenly distributed load of 20,000 lbs.

As part of the installation, iWeiss installed additional pre-engineered structural supports to the building’s original wooden truss beams.

Printed Banner for Spoleto Festival USA 2011

iWeiss provided a 26' wide x 33' high banner, consisting of vinyl mesh printed with the official poster of Spoleto Festival USA 2011. The poster was recently unveiled reminding everyone that the Festival is less than a month away. It features "Acoustic Mass I (Covent Garden)" by Guillermo Kuitca, which represents the energy that is heard, felt, and seen in the theater. Guillerma Kuitca also collaborated with iWeiss on the printed house curtain for Winspear Opera in Dallas, TX.

Banner Hoist System for Footlocker

iWeiss was recently contracted by Coloredge Visual to furnish and install a motorized banner hoist system to operate a 30’ tall salutation banner in the storefront window of the new Footlocker on 34^th street in Manhattan. The motorized system will allow Footlocker to lower and exchange the banner on a monthly basis within the tight constraints of a 20’ wide but only 18 inches deep window display area. Consisting of a yo-yo-drum winch and individual loft blocks for three lift lines, this banner hoist system has a vertical travel of up to 40’. A push button control station was installed on the lower level of the building so that the operator can observe the pipe batten while it is being raised or lowered. The banner was supplied by Coloredge Visual.

Metropolitan Opera’s staging of John Adams’s “Nixon in China.” Prime Minister Zhou Enlai's formal dinner in Nixon’s honor figures prominently in the 1987 Opera that is making its debut at the Met. The dinner menu is being recreated for 60 invited guests on Jan. 31, after the dress rehearsal.
