Unusual Speaker Covers for UVA Sound Lounge

March 05, 2010
I. Weiss was contracted by Showman Fabricators to provide the fabric covers for two sonic cones installed for a Sound Lounge at Campbell Hall, UVA School of Architecture.

Unlike modern mobile devices such as iPods that tend to isolate their users the sound lounge is meant to bring users together. The sonic cones installed between the mezzanine and lower level area of the lobby contain holosonic speakers that create separate listening environments where small groups of students and teachers can create and share their own soundscapes by tapping into four closed-circuit channels that connect them with a range of sites, thereby creating a communal experience.

The covers were made of custom dyed velvet on the inside and Pistachio colored heavyweight satin on exterior.

Design by Joel Sanders Architect.
